Bioresorbable Lean Mg Alloys (Clinical Applicability)
Together with veterinarians, clinicians and cell biologists we study the clinical applicability of rare-earth-free fine-grained Mg-based alloys for deployment in bioresorbable implant applications. In general, it is found that implant degradation and related hydrogen-gas evolution do not negatively influence fracture healing, such that complete osteotomy consolidation is achieved in a relatively short time. We observe bone formation and in-growth without adverse reactions, such as fibrotic or sclerotic encapsulation, upon slow and homogeneous implant degradation. The implant material reveals good biocompatibility and osseointegration, and greatly supports bone formation and remodeling. In-human clinical studies are therefore currently being performed.
