Biomedical Properties of BMGs
Bulk metallic glasses are of increasing interest for permanent medical implants because of their superior wear resistance, good corrosion resistance, lower Young’s modulus, and enhanced strength compared to traditionally used crystalline implant materials such as Ti64. In this research area we study blood compatibility, osteogenic properties and antimicrobial activity towards BMG surfaces in comparison to Ti64. The results suggest a great potential for the deployment of Ti- and precious metal-based BMGs in musculoskeletal applications.
